What a Queensland Plumbing Licence Covers

Queensland plumbing runs on two licence layers. A person who does plumbing and drainage work holds an occupational licence, and a business taking that work on holds a plumbing and drainage contractor licence; the QBCC issues both.

An occupational licence shows the holder has the skills for the trade. A contractor licence shows the business can carry the work financially and is set up to run it properly.

Within the trade, each class has its own reach:

  • A plumber's licence covers plumbing work, aside from jobs carrying a separate endorsement.
  • A drainer's licence covers the drainage side, meaning the pipes and fixtures below ground level.
  • Gas work sits under its own rule: only a licensed gasfitter may install, remove, alter, repair, service, test or certify a gas system and its pipework.

Paperwork and Inspections After a Job

Two bodies share the watching brief. The QBCC licenses plumbers, keeps the notifiable work register and chases unlicensed work, while the local council handles permits for new jobs and inspects them.

The paperwork you receive depends on the job:

  1. Form 4

After notifiable work, you receive a copy of the Form 4, and the QBCC holds the notice on its register. Missed yours? The QBCC can send another.

  2. Gas compliance certificate

When we finish gas work that is new or alters a system, you get the certificate on the spot, and a copy goes to the network operator inside 5 days.

The QBCC website lets you check any licence, and an address search shows whether a Form 4 has been registered for a property.

The Suburbs We Work Across

Our regular run takes in the post-war houses along Maundrell Terrace, the townhouse pockets nearby, and the neighbouring suburbs. Two of those neighbours have their own pages: Plumber in McDowall and Plumber in Bridgeman Downs. The full catchment sits on our areas page.

Questions About Our Aspley Plumbers

Call (07) 3524 7137

What is the difference between a plumber and a drainer?

A plumber's licence covers plumbing work above ground, such as supply pipes and fixtures. A drainer's licence covers drainage work below ground level, like sewer and stormwater lines. Plenty of tradespeople hold both, and one licence alone never covers the other class of work.

What paperwork do I get after plumbing work in Aspley?

Two documents, depending on the job. Notifiable work earns you a copy of the Form 4, which the QBCC also keeps on its register. Gas work on a new install or an alteration earns a gas compliance certificate on the spot, with a copy lodged with the network operator inside 5 days.

What does QBCC licensed mean for my Aspley plumbing job?

The QBCC is the Queensland body that issues occupational licences to plumbers and contractor licences to businesses, and it runs the notifiable work register. QBCC licensed means the licence is current and checkable, and ours reads QBCC No: 15024607.

Do you work on units and rentals as well as houses?

Yes, houses, townhouses, units and rentals all feature in a normal week, for owners, landlords, tenants and body corporates. The work itself does not change; what changes is who signs off. A rental needs the owner's or manager's approval, and a unit can need body corporate consent before anyone touches shared pipes.
